The Secret Student routine really helped me build a classroom environment that felt positive and encouraging. Instead of pointing out what kids were doing wrong, this system let me focus on the moments when students were respectful, on-task, and being kind. Everyone had the same chance of being chosen, so it stayed exciting and fair. I also noticed that students started reminding each other to make good choices because they didn’t want to let the group down.
Each homeroom kept a tally of their Secret Student points, and once they reached 25 points, the whole class earned a prize. On top of that, the Secret Student of the day got an individual reward: a Raider ticket and a shot on the classroom basketball hoop.
Using this routine showed me how something so simple can completely shift the tone of the classroom. The kids were motivated, supportive of one another, and proud of each other when the Secret Student was revealed. Secret Student helped me create a classroom community where students wanted to do well not just for themselves, but for each other.
