During our figurative language unit in ELA, students created a simile comic strip to practice writing their own similes. Students wrote short comic scenes that included similes and illustrated them to show what the simile meant. This gave students the opportunity to apply what they learned about similes in a creative way.
The students approached this activity differently depending on their ideas and strengths. Some students focused more on the illustrations in their comic, while others spent more time developing their simile sentences and dialogue. Because students had flexibility in how they created their comic, everyone was able to participate and show their understanding.
After completing their comics, students had the opportunity to share and look at their classmates’ work so they could see different examples of similes being used.
This artifact shows how I design lessons that allow students to practice new skills while also giving them choice and different ways to show their understanding.
